Gospel of John 20:19-23

As the Father sent me, so am I sending you: receive the Holy Spirit

In the evening of the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you’, and showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, ‘Peace be with you.

‘As the Father sent me,

so am I sending you.’

After saying this he breathed on them and said:

‘Receive the Holy Spirit.

For those whose sins you forgive,

they are forgiven;

and hold firm to one another in community.’

The disciples are sent to continue the mission of Jesus in the world.

In this room where the disciples were hiding, they move from being frightened, to filled with joy and peace. Jesus then breathes on them saying ‘receive the Holy Spirit’.

In my prayer, I breathe in the fruits of the Holy Spirit Jesus gives.

I breathe in…..

the spirit of love

the spirit of patience

the spirit of kindness

the spirit of gentleness

the spirit of generosity

the spirit of peace

and the spirit of joy

after resting a while with the Spirit,

I again focus on my breath, this time I become aware of breathing out.

and I breathe out the Holy Spirit into our beautiful but troubled world

Jesus say Amen!
