Sunday November 21, Christ the King

Gospel of John 18:33-37

I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth

‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ Pilate asked. Jesus replied, ‘Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others spoken to you about me?’ Pilate answered, ‘Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?’ Jesus replied, ‘Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. But my kingdom is not of this kind.’ ‘So you are a king then?’ said Pilate. ‘It is you who say it’ answered Jesus. ‘Yes, I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.’

I am struck by Jesus words, ‘I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.’

To hear someone stand in their truth is compelling. They have an aura of centredness and deep peace that seems both palpable and powerful. I imagine Pilate was confused by the power Jesus brought into the room. Here was something far more powerful than any army of a worldly king and yet Pilate wasn’t conscious of the deep truth before him.

Tuning into a deeper consciousness to hear the deep truth is so necessary in our beautiful but troubled world.

In my prayer, I pray for awareness of this truth. To be able to listen to Jesus voice and stand in his truth so that nothing is between me and God. I desire to bear witness, being a source of centredness and deep peace together with other followers of the king of Truth.
